- Renaissance program rewards students for grade performance, attendance, discipline and community service.
- 25% of teachers hold advanced degrees; nearly 60% with more than 10 years of experience.

- SIHS offers the four North Carolina Courses of Study: Career, College Prep/Tech, College/University Prep and Occupational.
- Offered career pathways include: Business, Family & Consumer Science, Agriculture, Masonry, Automotive, Allied Health, Drafting, Fine Arts and JROTC.
- The award-winning South Wind, the SIHS student newspaper, and is managed entirely by students.
- I.E. Literary & Arts Magazine is produced by the creative writing program. Its publication focus is student writing, but it also includes artwork and interviews.
- Class offerings in arts include visual arts, band and chorus and theater.
- National Honor Society, Beta Club, Tech Club, Future Business Leaders of America, PATH/Peer Helpers, Quiz Bowl and Youth Legislature are just some of the many student clubs available.
